Activities

There are lots of possible activities on Ærø. The coast THe coasts are very good for fishing, windsurfing or cayacing. Or golf at the new seaside golf course at Skjoldnæs Fyr.

Ærø is perfect for biking

There are many beaches on Ærø

Or walking in the beautiful nature

Søbygaard

Ærø offers an ”ocean” of possibilities: Angling, windsurfing and kayaking.

If you like art, there are lots of little potteries, weavers, galleries and other farm-shops and booths with arts and crafts.

The following activities are very suitable starting from Den Grønne Gren:

Golf
Only a 15 minute’s drive towards Skjoldnæs lighthouse brings you to Ærø’s newly established golf course, which is said to be one of the most attractive in Europe. Surrounded by coast-line on 3 sides, there is a stunning view over the archipelago in the north-east, the Little Belt in the north-west and not least the magnificent Baltic Coast in the south.

First stage was opened in the summer 2005 with a 9-hole course and driving range.

From September 2006 an 18-hole par-72 course will be ready for match.

It has to be something special to play “island-golf”. The course is designed and situated in a unique spot. It will be challenging with seaside, tableland and incredible views.

The course reflects the island. It is a challenge to play, varied and kindly demanding without being physically and technically exhausting. A course in harmony with the nature and special compared to other courses.

Bicycle-holiday
The island is unique for cycling. You can ride between Søby, Ærøskøbing and Marstal on the routes 90, 91 and 92. The routes are on the small idyllic roads away from the main road. The trip from Ærøskøbing to Bregninge is exceptionally beautiful with the sea on the right all the way; but there are many hills on Ærø! And particularly this stretch of road is called “The Ærø-Alps”. But, of course, when you get to Bregninge, you can take a well-earned beer in the garden.

Bicycle-hiring
Both in Søby, Ærøskøbing and Marstal you can hire bicycles. If you stay in Den Grønne Gren, you can have the bicycle delivered from Marstal.

The beaches
On Ærø we all live close to the beach. From Den Grønne Gren the distance to the beach is the same – app.1,5 km. - on the north side as on the south side. One side of the island differs essentially from the other. The north side towards the archipelago is sandy and mostly sheltered. The south side is very stony, and bathing shoes are recommended. But this beach is exciting if you are a stone collector; here you will find particularly many perforated stones. This is also where Kirsten from “Ærø Smykker” finds her stones and polishes them into beautiful jewellery.

Vandreture
As ideal as Ærø is for cycling it is for wandering. There are numerous footpaths in the beautiful countryside, along the beaches and on the bicycle routs. From Den Grønne Gren there are several short or longer walks, 3 -10 km. For instance you can follow the bicycle rout to Skovby, where you pass the newly opened nature reservation, the beach, Synneshøj (the highest viewpoint on Ærø). Continue on the bicycle route from Skovby to Søbygård. Søbygård is a manor house built in 1581. The castle, as we like to call it, is under considerable restoration. Here you will find a café, exhibitions and a concert hall.

From Søbygård you can walk back to Den Grønne Gren or continue on the footpath to Vitsø Nor and take a plunge in the fresh seawater.
