Experience Aeroe

Den Grønne Gren is a good starting point for trips around the island.

Ærøskøbing church.

The owen in Marstal.

A rare sight in Denmark.

Ærø is idyllic, full of peace and tranquillity, natural experiences, fresh air and lots of sunshine. It is also the island without a traffic light. AND there are people living here, who have never been off the island or even to Søby!

The “Ærøboer” are very festive people, who love to dance. At any given opportunity to party they will be dancing on the tables and singing lots of songs. They are generally kind and friendly, and will be looking forward to hearing your story.

The 2 most important festivities of the year are Easter Saturday, when everybody on the island is on the beach cooking eggs, and Shrovetide in Ærøskøbing and Marstal or Twelfth Night in Western Ærø, when they go from door to door wearing masks.

The towns
Søby is situated 6 km. from Den Grønne Gren. Søby is a busy dock- and fishing town. The shipyard is the biggest working place on the island. From Søby there are 2 ferry routes, one going to Fåborg on Fyn and one going to Mommark on Als. In Søby you can enjoy a stroll in the marina, mini golf, crocket and petanque.

Ærøskøbing. 10 km. from Den Grønne Gren is fairytale-town Ærøskøbing – the most well-preserved 18th Century town in Denmark. Many of the houses are listed. Ærøskøbing with its cobbled streets, hollyhocks and well-kept little houses with many funny details seems like pure idyll. The town offers a lot of interesting shops with arts and crafts, weaving etc. museums, “Bottle-Peter’s” collection and the local cinema “Andelen”. Ærøskøbing has a ferry to Svendborg on Fyn and a fabulous marina. This is also where the annual regatta takes place.

Marstal is 20 km. from Den Grønne Gren and the largest town on the island. Its long maritime history is everywhere. One could spend a whole day in the maritime museum. Marstal is a pretty town with cute fisherman’s houses in all colours. Enjoy them while you walk through the narrow streets and alleys.

Besides the towns there are many lovely villages hidden on the island, and lots of activities – just go out and explore.
